Clarification on new plans for Mattermost Boards

I’m referring to What's Next for Mattermost Boards

The quotes below sound like “Boards” is the next thing you will paywall for everyone. Please make clear what your plans are as our Mattermost Boards are very heavily used and I don’t want them to have to migrate in an outrageously short time because you announce this change just before the deadline (again)!

If your plan is to paywall Mattermost Boards please explain why. I don’t see any reason for that and paywalling stuff that was free to use for everyone is a really shitty move. But you know that already, you were criticized a lot in the last months because of a lot of such moves… By the way, this thread is still waiting for an officiall statement from Mattermost Inc.: Request for clarification from Mattermost Inc. on certain limitations introduced in v10

We’re focusing our efforts on exploring a best-in-class, native task management experience within Mattermost using message properties that allows for dynamic integration of cards across the platform that will eventually replace the Boards plugin.

If you’d like to review early draft concepts and share your use cases with us, please contact your customer representative or reach out to us at product@mattermost.com.
(…)
To give us time for this exploration, we won’t be adding new features to the Boards plugin, and the plugin has been removed from the in-product App Marketplace. We will continue to deliver critical bug fixes and security updates to ensure a reliable experience for Mattermost Enterprise customers.
(…)
The open-source Focalboard project is available as a standalone solution for task and project management that doesn’t require a Mattermost server or an Mattermost Enterprise license.

And no, standalone Focalboard is no replacement for the integrated Boards plugin at all!

Please @it33_mattermost, we need the position of Mattermost Inc. on all those change. You have to answer our questions to make the situation clear for the sysadmin.

Thank you both for sharing your feedback! I understand your concerns, and while I don’t have an official statement to provide at this time, I want to assure you that I will pass your comments along to the team. I recognize how important Boards is to your workflow, and I appreciate you taking the time to voice your thoughts. If any updates become available, I’ll be sure to communicate them here.

@rdelaage @rtfm There are currently no plans to add a paywall for Boards plugin. Boards is currently in maintenance mode by providing updates for security vulnerabilities and support for our Enterprise customers. Boards updates are not available in the in-product marketplace but new releases can be found in the Board plugin repo at: Releases · mattermost/mattermost-plugin-boards · GitHub

As mentioned in What's Next for Mattermost Boards, we are exploring future options to incorporate Boards-like functionality into the core product that will eventually replace Boards plugin. This is still long-term vision, no yet scheduled and once more concrete we will share migration paths if necessary.

It’s been a few months, and I happened to notice your tacit changes in the docs:

plans-img-yellow Available on Entry, Enterprise, and Enterprise Advanced plans (not available on Professional)

What does this mean? Is Boards paywalled now, too? What are the next things you’re going to “deprecate” for “non-licensed” servers?

Is it really worth scaring away your open-source users who helped build your company?

I refer to the docs “Project and Task Management”, “Work with boards”, “Install Mattermost Boards”, and so on.

@marianunez @john.combs @it33_mattermost What are your plans with the free-to-use Boards plugin? On the pricing page, I recently found the following:

And according to this guide it’s available for Entry, Enterprise and Enterprise Advanced plans only.

The first sentence also implies that Boards (now) is for Enterprise customers only:

Mattermost Boards is not enabled by default for new Mattermost Enterprise instances. If the Mattermost Boards plugin isn’t enabled for your Mattermost workspace, self-hosted Enterprise customers can install this plugin by manually uploading the binary release file into the System Console and enabling it.

Please make a clear statement on this topic.

It looks like Mattermost is pausing new development on the Boards plugin and is planning a new native task management system. While they haven’t explicitly announced a paywall, no new features will be added to Boards, and it’s been removed from the App Marketplace. Critical bug fixes and security updates will continue, and Focalboard is suggested as a standalone alternative. Users relying heavily on Boards should keep an eye on updates and consider exploring Focalboard or other solutions.

Hi @rtfm! As I understand it currently, there are no plans to add a new paywall for the Boards plugin; it’s currently in maintenance mode while the team explores a long-term native replacement, and I’m sure they’ll share a clear comms + migration guidance well in advance if that ever changes.

I’ve also escalated this question to our team internally as well, and will follow-up if there’s anything to add.

@rtfm - Quick clarification: the Boards plugin isn’t being newly paywalled, and it can still be used across editions, but official support/prioritization (bug triage + fixes) is reserved for Enterprise customers. The team is also working toward a more integrated “Boards-like” experience long-term, and will share clear packaging + migration guidance once that plan is concrete (well before any required changes).
