If there was a way we could synchronize the calendar to Nextcloud on Focalboard, that would be really awesome.

I’m unfortunately not aware of any plans to support that in the near future, but I suggest to raise your voice in Mattermost’s ProductBoard. If your idea gets enough votes, we might see it in the near future.
