Dear community,
we read in the Mattermost Discussion Forum that GitLab Mattermost and GitLab SSO will be deprecated in the Mattermost Team Edition in v11. Security releases will be delivered for another year for v10.11 until August 2026 or until GitLab removes Mattermost from the Omnibus GitLab bundle.
We contacted the GitLab Inc. Sales and they kindly asked us to talk to Mattermost Inc. to get information about that topic.
We are wondering now for how long will Mattermost Upgrade Merge Requests be merged into Omnibus GitLab for v10.11?
Will Omnibus GitLab continue to bundle Mattermost at this point in time and for how long?
Is there a roadmap or deprecation or removal notice somewhere so that users can plan ahead?
Thank you very much for your responses and discussion!
Hi there, and thanks for reaching out with these important questions.
You’re correct — GitLab has shared plans to deprecate Mattermost from their Omnibus bundle in a future release. Mattermost v10.11 ESR (Extended Support Release) will continue to receive security and maintenance updates in the Gitlab Omnibus from Mattermost through August 2026, or until GitLab removes Mattermost from the Omnibus package, whichever comes first.
At this time, we haven’t received any official timeline or deprecation details from GitLab regarding when Mattermost will be fully removed from the Omnibus distribution. We will share any new information with the community once it becomes available.
In the meantime, we recommend that administrators using GitLab’s Omnibus package start planning for migration to a standalone Mattermost installation to ensure continued access to new versions and feature updates beyond v10.11. You can find a detailed migration guide here: Migrate from GitLab Omnibus to Mattermost Standalone.
We’ll continue to publish updates and guidance as soon as we have more clarity from GitLab. Thanks again for your patience and for helping others in the community plan ahead.
