Unexpected issue regarding Mobile App v2.42.x

Hello,

I’d like to share an issue we recently encountered regarding the mobile app update and ask for some insights.

When our mobile users were updated to version 2.42.x, users connecting to our production server running Mattermost Server v9.7.x encountered a “Server upgrade required” message and were immediately disconnected, preventing any access via mobile.

To restore mobile connectivity for our organization, we had to perform an emergency upgrade of our Mattermost Server to v10.11.x.

For organizations running production environments, abrupt breaking changes between the mobile client and server like this can have a major operational impact and require unplanned downtime/upgrades.

Is this level of breaking change in minor mobile updates expected according to the mobile compatibility policy, or is there a way to prevent mobile apps from hard-blocking server connections unexpectedly in the future?

Thanks!

Hi @YJLEE. I’m sorry that this requirement forced an emergency upgrade within your organization. Although we’ve stopped supporting v9.x in August 2025, it’s our fault for failing to communicate the mobile requirements well in advance of this most recent change.

We’re fixing our communication plan with the next planned bump to require v10.11 as of October. The plan is to continue mobile support for the ESR that just rotated out of support – so v10.11 remains supported on mobile until February 2027. See Starting in October 2026, the Mattermost mobile app will require Mattermost server v10.11 or later for the details.

We’ll aim to communicate this regularly going forward to help you plan for server upgrades. Please continue sharing your feedback to help us fix mistakes like this and improve our offering!
