Deprecation Notice: Server Builds for Microsoft Windows

In the February 2025 Mattermost release (and next ESR), Mattermost will stop providing official Mattermost server builds for the Microsoft Windows operating system. Administrators should migrate existing Mattermost server installations to use the official Linux builds.

What are Windows server builds?

Windows server builds are pre-compiled versions of the Mattermost server specifically packaged for the Windows operating systems, allowing administrators to run the Mattermost server natively on Windows without additional virtualization or containerization.

Although our server release process has generated Windows builds for some time, deploying on Windows is not supported. Instead of running the Mattermost server directly on Windows, administrators should migrate to one of our supported deployment environments such as Red Hat, Kubernetes, and Docker. (View all supported options at Host Mattermost on Your Own Infrastructure)

How can I migrate my existing server deployment?

Mattermost provides comprehensive deployment documentation for all supported environments. Visit Deploy Mattermost - Mattermost documentation for more information.

Why are official Windows server builds being deprecated?

Offering an official server build for an unsupported platform is inconsistent with our desire to provide mission-critical infrastructure. Furthermore, the vast majority of our customers already run the Mattermost server on Linux-based systems, making it challenging to justify the resources required for Windows-specific builds.

Can I still build the Mattermost server for Windows manually?

Yes, the build tooling retains the ability to generate unofficial Windows server builds for Mattermost Team Edition. It will not be possible to build Mattermost Enterprise Edition without access to that closed source repository.

Does this affect the Mattermost Desktop app for Windows?

No, the Mattermost Desktop app remains fully supported.
