[Solved] Is there any limitations on user count Mattermost community version?

Dear Team ,

Is there any limit on number of users for Mattermost community version ? Since we faced some issues while adding users to MM instance and it says “there are no teams available” and users got some error somewhat like “You have exceeded user limit , you need to procure licenses” . We tried to increase user limit in config.json from 300 to 500 but still we are not able to add the user to particular channel .
Please advice .

Regards ,
Ron

Just a stupid question : Are you sure you fits the hardware requirement for hosting Mattermost with 500 users ?

Hi @rohan23, thank you for your question.

There are no user limits on the Mattermost community version, but you may want to check that your Max Users per Team setting is configured high enough to allow that many users. The limit is there so that administrators can scale their system based on hardware requirements.

With that said, it appears you increased the limit, but the user is still facing this issue. If so, are you open to sharing a screenshot of the error that is shown, and we’ll aim to troubleshoot the issue with you?

Dear Team ,

I’m a beginner, and I want to use mattermost free community, are there any user limitations if I use mattermost free community which is hosted on my server.because I plan to use it for 5000++ users.

regards,

Update as of February 2025:

Mattermost has introduced user limits to the free version as part of an ongoing process to better align it with its intended use for small teams. This has been implemented gradually, with admin warnings and hard limits. Currently, the limits are set at 5,000 users (warning) and 11,000 users (hard limit), and we will continue lowering these thresholds until reaching 1,000 users.

For more details on these changes and the reasoning behind them, you can refer to this discussion thread where Ian has provided additional context: Feedback on Collaboration for Mission-Critical Work.

Hi,

With the self-hosted free platform, what are the limits with regards to group calls? I want to use BigBlueButton with around 100-200 users at a time. I realize there are hardware limits, but I am specifically asking about feature capability and license permission to have 200 users on a group call with the open source free self-hosted edition?

This will allow me to continue to use Mattermost instead of deploying a different platform.

Thank you!

Hi @jasonblais!

There are no user limits on the Mattermost community version

From what I gather from the 10.6 changelog, the above statement will not hold true any longer:

Unlicensed server limits have been updated: a soft limit of 2500 users now results in a banner notification visible by admins, and a 5K hard limit that prevents the creation or activation of users until the user count is reduced below the hard limit.

Is this assessment correct?

EDIT: must have missed this.

Cheers
Thomas

So beginning with 10.6 the limitiation will be set lower and lower.
Are theese upcoming limits depending Server Version number?
Are there differences between selfhosted and not selfhostet delpoyments?
