As far as I understood the announcements about version 11, the user limit of 250 users per server should only apply to the binaries provided by Mattermost, and not to self-hosted and self-compiled servers.
However, perhaps I’ve misunderstood something.
My self-compiled and self-hosted server does not allow more than 250 users.
If this remains the case, we will unfortunately have to look for another solution, which I would find very regrettable.
I would appreciate some clarification on this matter.
Sure. Do You know where to change which parameter(s)?
At the moment we are around 400 people privately connected. not all active all the time. but whe I would move to V11 I would have to get rid of one third.
This use case is present nearly everywhere, e.g. in small companies, but also in companies with more employees that can’t or don’t want to afford the really high license fees. And apart from that, there are many, many use cases, where a company doesn’t want any of the enterprise features and no support, either. Why are you abandoning or forcing them to buy a license they don’t need?
I know that it’s possible to self-compile everything, but that’s just unnecessary extra effort preventing them from doing their real work. And in air-gapped or restricted environments, that’s not even possible, like at my company. And no, it’s not critical infrastructure or anything, it’s just normal IT security and policy for good reasons.
With your recent restrictions regarding user limits, group calls, Playbooks, … you’re driving these people away to other or better products, including the need to find working migration paths. Even though some of them are or were contributors to your product, you now paywall in any possible way
We are in a similar situation with 295 (and growing) users in the Mattermost instance for our Formula Student team. We have an annual budget of less than 100k$ and thus no way to pay for a commercial license. Additionally we do not qualify for a non-profit license because we are affiliated with a university (even though we are a separate legal non-profit entity). We are also not eligible for an academic license because we are not an academic institution, have no active staff (only students) and could not justify the 10 paid accounts in the budget regardless. We tried reaching out before to maybe get a custom deal but were rejected. As a result we are currently preparing to move away from Mattermost in light of the v11 release which I find very regrettable.
I know of a few other teams in similar situations. This is not uncommon.
The limits are in server/channels/app/limits.go. There is also a fork maintained by Framasoft called Mostlymatter but that has not been updated to v11 yet.
Thank you — I’ve already found and fixed it. From now on, we’ll stick with our self-compiled Mattermost Edition featuring elevated limits and personal branding. This setup will easily cover our needs for many years.
I’ve also started setting up a Discourse instance as a backup — just in case.
Still, Mattermost feels more convenient for my workflow: it offers at least one level of nested threads, integrates well with OnlyOffice, and overall suits my usage style better.
That said, I’d actually be willing to pay for a few of the enterprise features (like guest access, server-wide announcements, and more granular user rights management) — but the price is simply too high for the few functions I’d really use.
