Exceeded User Limit on Mattermost Free Plan – Potential Future Issues?

Hello Mattermost Team,

I have recently added over 5000 users to our Mattermost instance, which is on the free plan that has a 50-user limit. Although I received a warning message stating ‘User limits exceeded. Contact administrator with: ERROR_SAFETY_LIMITS_EXCEEDED,’ all functionalities seem to be working fine at the moment.

I am concerned about potential issues that might arise in the future due to exceeding the user limit. Could you please clarify if there are any risks or limitations I should be aware of? Will this affect the performance, security, or any other aspects of our Mattermost instance moving forward?

Thank you for your assistance.

Honestly, with 5000 users not being managed by LDAP/AD or SSO, all running on a single instance with no High Availability, I’m surprised you aren’t already running into issues! I think a hard limit of 10,000 has been introduced. The warning is more of an informational thing that you’re skating closer and closer to the edge of the pond.

Hi John Oliver,
Regarding the warning about the 10,000 user limit, could you clarify where this information came from? Is there any official documentation from Mattermost that confirms this limit? Thank you.

@tungpx this was implemented in 9.5

@john.oliver
I’m sorry for asking the question unclearly. I understand that Mattermost added a warning about the user limit (10,000 users) from version 9.5 and in version 9.8 (5,000 users), but this doesn’t affect the fact that Mattermost doesn’t limit the number of users in the free version, right? Of course, the warning ERROR_SAFETY_LIMITS_EXCEEDED will still appear.

Correct. It’s just a warning.
