Design Preview: Multi-tasking improvements with multi-window support

Hi everyone, I’d like to share an early preview of enhancements we’re exploring to improve multi-tasking in Mattermost. Operational teams often need to juggle a lot conversations across disparate channels and topics simultaneously. Jumping back and forth between conversations wastes time, increases errors, and users lose their place, making it difficult to collaborate in a focused manner.

So we’re exploring support for multiple windows—designed for mission-critical multitasking. With this solution, you can keep priority conversations visible at all times, monitor live updates, and work with multiple conversations simultaneously without losing track.

Below is a peek at the capability in action. DISCLAIMER: This is an early design preview and is undergoing customer validation. If this is important to you, we need to hear about it.

Open a channel in a new window to monitor activity

To keep a close eye on this incident channel we’re going to open the channel menu and choose the new ‘open in new window’ option. Now we’ve got a focused view of this channel that we can keep on screen and resize or move as needed. We can also access this option from the left sidebar.

Keep a thread open in its own window for easy follow-up

In situations where you’re deep in a detailed thread and don’t want to lose track of it, you can also open individual threads in their own window. A ‘new’ window’ button displays in the thread header for quick access to open it. This can also be done in the ‘Threads’ inbox view. Stay locked in on one investigation, while monitoring others. No more context switching."

Move windows to other screens for next-level multi-tasking

We’d also like to bring multi-window support to other aspects of the produce—like Copilot and Playbook Runs. You may want the main Mattermost window on one screen while keeping track of a Phishing incident playbook and using Mattermost Copilot in separate windows on the other screen.

How would this help with your workflows?

We think multi-window support can unlock the ability for teams operate with increased precision, speed and focus. We’d love to hear feedback from our customers, so let us know your thoughts on this solution.
