Now with new feature ‘Threads’ released, Reply functionality becomes very valuable, so it’s important go have UI that makes it easy to utilize it. Similar to Mobile, it’s much easier to just select a message and view/start Thread, rather than look for small reply icon Best

Desktop - Open Reply (Threads) upon double click on message

You can go to Settings > Display Settings > Click to open threads > Off.
